Tantra is a diverse and sometimes complex spiritual and philosophical tradition. It encompasses a wide range of beliefs, practices, and rituals, and its meaning and interpretation can vary greatly.

Tantra means is to weave. The weaving refers to the idea of weaving of the various aspects of our existence into one beautiful tapestry. It incorporates various practices, philosophies and rituals to create a comprehensive and integrated approach to spirituality, life in the world, and personal transformation. Weaving together different elements, including physical and spiritual practices, rituals, symbols and mantras, with the aim of attaining spiritual insight, self-realization, harmony and balance, and unity with the divine is Tantra.

We live in a materialistic age in which spiritual traditions are recast or scaled down to a physical model. While this can be helpful in today’s setting, it doesn’t reveal the true scope or intention of these teachings. The physical side of yoga has been emphasized in the West even though this represents only a small part of classical yoga. The same has happened to Tantra.

Tantra has been widely misinterpreted and sensationalized in the West, which has led to misconceptions. It’s always best to explore it with a qualified teacher or guru. Suzanne has practiced this tradition for more than 20 years.

Tantra includes a rich selection of ancient texts. These texts are often written in the form of dialogues between the divine and the seeker and provide guidance in a variety or practices, rituals and spiritual concepts.

The idea that divinity can be found in all aspects of life, including the physical, material and sensual, is rooted in Tantra. It emphasizes the oneness of the individual self or Atman, with the universal consciousness or Brahman.

Sacred symbols called yantras and chanting using mantras are means of connecting with higher states of consciousness. They can be used in meditation, rituals and other practices and are core practices in Tantra.

Rituals however, are not required in Tantra. Some paths use no external objects or rituals to experience the creative force and creation.

“The essence of tantra is the interconnectedness of all life.”- Osho

Tantra encompasses a wide variety of rituals and practices. It has a rich history with various lineages, each emphasizing specific practices, philosophies and rituals. Hatha yoga, the widely practiced physical form of yoga is rooted in Tantra.

The Shakta Tantra lineage places a strong emphasis on our connection with primordial energy, the goddess, Shakti. It focuses on the divine feminine and the power of the goddess as the creative force in the universe. Women’s bodies provide the sacred gateway for all souls to incarnate on this earth. Their womb is the sacred container for a soul to inhabit and a life to grow.

A very small and often sensationalized aspect of Tantra involves sexual practices aimed at the spiritual transformation and harmonization of the masculine and feminine energies. The aim is the enlightenment of both partners. This is practiced in a sacred and disciplined context but has been widely misused and misinterpreted.

“Awakening the Shakti within is the key to unlocking the infinite potential that resides in every human being.” Anodea Judith

Tantra is concerned with providing us with the tools to discover truth for ourselves without promoting any particular dogma or ideology.

Tantra emphasizes techniques or energetic approaches, including ritual, mantra and visualization. Ultimately, these are employed to take us beyond techniques rather than as an end in themselves.

Tantra affirms the importance of the body as a temple for the Divine and grants it a sacred reality. It sees the body as a mystic symbol. The body is simply the best vehicle nature can provide to aid us in our spiritual growth. As such, we should respect the body and care properly for it because it is our means of gaining experience and enlightenment.

The Tantric approach is very practical. We should do the highest practice that we are truly capable of, but not overlook anything that might be helpful, however apparently insignificant. Increasing the energy of our consciousness in our daily lives is what matters most.

Suzanne is a knowledgable, dedicated, long time practitioner of Tantra and Sri Vidya and can guide you on your journey.
